Ca commençait bien, juste une petite gratte acoustique, un petit gimmick sympa, puis vint...la voix, éraillée, grinçante, dérangée certainement, comme un sale gosse en colère, aiguë, excitée. Une voix qu'on dirait coupante comme une lame de rasoir chère aux punks. Alors une chose est sûre, il va y avoir 2 camps: ceux qu'un pareil cauchemar vocal ne dérangera pas, charmés par la folie qui s'en dégage, amoureux des esprits malades, ceux qui l'apprivoiseront ou qui sauront s'y faire et...les autres, qu'on imagine nombreux, qui ne dépasseront pas, dans le meilleur des cas le 3ème titre, craignant que Satan lui même ne jaillisse des enceintes.

Mais c'est dans les flammes de l'enfer que ces derniers iront brûler quand même, enfer de l'ignorance, qui les fera passer à côté de cet authentique voyage dans le temps. « It's 2010, and I don't care ! » se diront-ils. Mais ceux qui auront su trouver leur chemin au milieu du déluge de cris, de grattes tranchantes et de bile, ceux là sauront que ce disque constitue la plus sûre machine à remonter dans le temps vers le Punk originel.
Le Punk de 1968, indéniablement préfiguré par le « Helter Skelter » des Beatles, ici magnifiquement repris.
Le Punk des Stooges, si tant est que l'on puisse qualifier ainsi l'œuvre de jeunesse du père Iggy. Une musique haute en énergie, variée, réellement malsaine, loin du cliché qu'elle deviendra et ses accords plaqués en moins de 3 minutes.
Tout ici rappelle les glorieux anciens: son, compos et ambiances variées, homogénéisé par cette voix si particulière, atmosphère malsaine, entre mid tempos malades et crises de rage primaire. A des années lumière du Punk a roulettes, car si roulette il y a, celle ci est Russe, bruit infecté ou condensé d’énergie adolescente, de provocation et de frustration, l’équilibre est toujours précaire mais comme un chat sauvage, le groupe retombe immanquablement sur ses pattes.

Avec P.L.M.B. on pourra difficilement continuer de prétendre que les américains ne sont que des rustres grossiers, incultes et bas du front.
OK ! Y en a qui correspondent à cette définition, comme partout ailleurs dans le monde, mais il n'empêche qu'il y a aussi quelques « aliens » qui s'entendent à casser ces stéréotypes en faisant preuve d'une belle ouverture d'esprit, et d'un humour pataphysique que n'auraient certes pas renié les plus grands humoristes parnassiens du début du 20ème siècle.
Buddy A, en kid newyorkais au format de poche, n'a rien à envier aux plus gouailleurs de nos gavroches parisiens.

Prenez le nom de son groupe tout d'abord, P.L.M.B., c'est pour "Pathological Lying Mutant Bird", ce qui, même pour un non anglophone, reste largement traductible dans le non-sens et l'humour décalé.

Il en va d'ailleurs de même avec le titre de ce premier album de P.L.M.B., à des années-lumière des niaiseries consensuelles habituellement usitées pour ne pas effaroucher le consommateur éventuel dans les rayons aseptisés des supermarchés du disque américains. Mais voilà, Buddy A aime bien donner des coups de pied dans les fourmilières de la pensée unique.
Un humour ravageur qu'on retrouve de-ci de-là, au gré des 18 morceaux de ce disque.

Des exemples ? Allez! "O.B. (Ovulation Boulevard)", "C.C.C. (Cancel The Cancelled Cancellation)", "Dad Is Mad", "Melon Colony", "P.A.P. (Personal Ass Puppet)", pour n'en citer que quelques-uns.
Il est déjà rafraîchissant de pouvoir se gargariser de cette dérision jubilatoire, il l'est tout autant de se lancer dans l'exploration sonore de l'univers musical de P.L.M.B.

Un univers empreint d'un Rock 'n Roll arty propre à New-York, avec d'évidentes références punks, mais pas trop, et quelques touches noisy soniques, mais plutôt stratosphériques que bassement terre à terre.
Les guitares sont claires, même si largement saturées et distordues, les beats de batterie sont francs du collier et adéquatement métronomiques, les lignes de basse sont classiquement efficaces, empêchant l'ensemble de s'éparpiller au fil du vent en ancrant solidement tout ce petit monde sur la portée.
Et puis il y a la voix de Buddy A, une voix d'écorché vif, toujours à la limite du décrochage dans ses acrobaties vocales de haut vol. On croit toujours qu'il va perdre pied, qu'il va déraper, qu'il va se ratatiner lamentablement après avoir fait la cabriole de trop, celle mal contrôlée et peu maîtrisée qui lui vaudra une solide rééducation lyrique, mais non, le farfadet connaît ses limites, sait jusqu'où il peut aller sans atteindre le point de non retour, et, du coup, ses feulements de chat sauvage, ses chuintements de gobelin en rogne, ses raclements de grand lézard squameux, ses frottements orageux de tôle ondulée, vous font apprécier d'autant mieux ses efforts pour se fondre dans l'incandescence du Rock 'n Roll désincarné de P.L.M.B.

Mais pas seulement, parce que le groupe, comme je le disais en ouverture, sait aussi prendre ailleurs ce qui peut lui permettre de s'affirmer, comme la sonorité de la kora, cet instrument typiquement africain, et, pour le coup, si peu newyorkais, sur "Cadmium", ou encore comme la reprise du "Helter Skelter" des Beatles, ramené ici à sa plus simple expression viscérale, probablement assez proche de ce que Charles Manson crut y déceler quand l'écoute de cette chanson provoqua en lui la folie meurtrière qui lui fit commanditer le massacre de Sharon Tate et du couple LaBianca par sa "famille".
La version de P.L.M.B. est sulfureuse à souhait, et nous fait nous rappeler que ce titre fut aussi l'un des plus violents et teigneux des Fab Four qui traversaient pourtant alors une période mystique plus propre à leur faire voir la vie en couleurs et en substances hallucinogènes.

Here it is, an exclusive interview with the man who needs no introduction to Iggy and the Stooges fans...six stringer extraordinaire "Straight" James Williamson!

1. 'Raw Power' and 'Kill City' are considered "classics" by many fans and critics. Do you agree? Why or why not?

In the sense that it is a unique and authoritative work, I'd agree. Nothing before or after it has sounded quite like it. It was a stand alone effort.

2. Back in the early 70s, you had a "dark" sort of image with the make-up and the black clothes. Was that an extension of your personality, or was it just experimentation?

Is there a differance between an "extension of your personality" and "experimentation"? Yes. However, the darkness aspect was overrated. Those who know me, know that I'm actually a little shy and certainly reserved so that can come off as dark sometimes.

3. If the original line-up of Iggy and the Stooges did in fact succeed, where do you think the band would have went?

If I understand you question, you are asking if the two guitar lineup had succeeded? If this is what you are asking, its impossible to answer other than, we had started working up new material as you can hear on the new release 1971 from easyaction records...beyound that it's anybody's guess.

Regarding the 72'-74' lineup, I think we would have continued to evolve new material...in all likely hood we would have done the album Kill City with the stooge or at least alot of that material and is its totally appropriate that the reunited Iggy and the Stooges have that material to draw on as well....of course what's ifs very hard to determine, but we were truely evolving very rapidly and it could have become really interesting....well it did become really interesting, but I just mean it could have taken on very new and differant directions...who knows?

4. What do you believe it would have taken to gain commercial success in '73 and '74?

You needed very accessible music...like pop music...catchy tunes, that sort of thing which we were never about..people didn't want to think too much, they just wanted to sing along to the radio...still do I guess.

5. I understand that Columbia Records recorded a show on New Year's Eve of '73. Is this true? If it is, will you and/or Iggy see to it that it is released?

I'm not sure about that, I vaguely recall discussions about that but all I remember was our rehersals being taped (not videoed)

6. When you heard about the death of Ron Asheton, what was your reaction?

I was intially shocked, then sad that Ron should pass away at such a young age. However, as time passed I was comforted in the knowledge that he went out doing what he wanted to do most, which was playing with the Stooges. You know none of us are getting out of here alive, so you've got to do your best to make things the way you want them.

I also wanted to add that Ron Ashton was a great guitar player in his own right. I had known him intially as the bass player in one of the last incarnations of my first band the Chosen Few. However, after he went on the found the Stooges with Iggy and his brother Scott along with Dave, I became one of their biggest fans. I saw them playing from day 1 in their house in Ann Arbor long before I was ever in the band.

Ron made a meaningful and lasting contribution to music and he'll be sorely missed by all those who ever rocked out to the Stooges.

7. Since you have rejoined the band, were there any restrictions and conditions that you felt had to be met?

Just that we were a band.

8. According to Iggy, most (if not all of) 'Raw Power' will be performed. Will there be songs performed that didn't make it on 'Raw Power' such as 'I'm Sick of You,' Cock in my Pocket,' and 'I Got a Right?'

No doubt. We're working on all of those that you mention and many, many more, however the final set list has not been decided yet.

9. When performing the 'Raw Power' tracks, will the various additional instrumentations (such as the celeste, acoustic guitar, and piano) be recreated?

No, probably not as we're going out as a simple line up.

10. Finally, does rejoining the band mean that you can make-up for the mistakes that were made 35 years ago? Why or why not?

Mistakes?, what mistakes? Anyway, certainly one mistake that we will correct is that we will perform songs that the audience actually knows this time around. It should make for a more enjoyable experience for all concerned.

Question : Qu'est-ce-que le MUTANT ROCK ?
Réponse : Il peut être décrit plus facilement avec 4 lettres: P.L.M.B. (Pathological Lying Mutant Bird).
L’évidente question suivante serait: Qu’est-ce-que P.L.M.B. ?
La réponse simple serait : « les pionniers d'un nouveau genre de musique appelé « Mutant Rock ».
Dans cet article, je ferai de mon mieux pour décrire cette nouvelle scène qui m’a laissé complètement déconcerté et enthousiaste.
J'ai découvert ce groupe dans un club de Paris alors qu’il délivrait un des sets les plus électrisants qu’il m’ait été donné de voir. Je ne sais pas trop d’où ces gars débarquent, mais je pense pouvoir affirmer que c’est un endroit plutôt ravagé, à haute teneur radioactive.
P.L.M.B. fait partie du label Siamese Dogs Records, label culte du début des années 70.
Début 1971, Philippe Mogane, co-fondateur, photographe rock de son état, en quête de pur Rock ‘n Roll et de liberté, s’embarque pour les USA. Excité par la sortie du L.P. « 1969 » des Stooges, Mogane va jusqu’à Détroit dénicher le groupe, qui allait être à l’origine d’une nouvelle ère musicale. Durant les mois qui suivent, il devient ami des Stooges et décide de fonder Siamese Dogs
Records avec le guitariste James Williamson (de l'album « Raw Power») comme Vice Président. Et en avril 1977, ils publient les désormais classiques "I Got A Right" et "Gimme Some Skin" des Stooges, lesquels selon les dires de Joey Ramone, contribueront à alimenter la scène Punk New–Yorkaise.
30 ans plus tard, Siamese Dogs Records est de nouveau prêt à vous distiller de vrais délires Rock ’n Rolliens. Le résultat d’un électro choc entre Mogane et le groupe inventeur du « Mutant Rock» : P.L.M.B. Dirigé par Buddy A, un « psychopathe de dessins animés », P.L.M.B. secoue les « égouts parisiens » en attente de l'explosion que tout Rocker espère; une révolution pour les oreilles des amateurs d’authentique Rock ‘n Roll du monde entier.
Je vais maintenant divulguer la recette « Mutant Rock» du cocktail P.L.M.B. :
Commencez par une bonne dose de Punk attitude façon Iggy Pop, ajoutez une pincée de poésie torturée à la Johnny Thunders. Prenez quelques grains de stupidité du power trio Green Day et agrémenter le tout d’une cuillère de démon rongeant l’âme de Nirvana. Terminer avec un zest de l’efficacité de Clash et des Ramones. Bien agiter, verser et servir. Eviter d’utiliser une paille. Buvez cul sec en penchant la tête.
AVERTISSEMENT : Tout le monde n’est pas habilité à boire ce cocktail.
Imaginer mon état à la fin du concert ! … Enthousiaste, j'ai joué des coudes pour rejoindre les membres du groupe et leur poser quelques questions « post-show ». Malheureusement, le batteur s’était évaporé dans la nature. Et arrivé à la hauteur du bassiste, celui ci m’a jeté un regard brusque du style "No Comment" et du coup je n’ai pas insisté.
Si jamais vous avez l’occasion de le croiser, vous comprendrez pourquoi !
Heureusement, j’ai réussi à attraper le guitariste/chanteur et à le bombarder de questions, ce qui eût pour effet d’engendrer plus de difficultés que de réponses.
Cet énergumène, probablement échappé d’un asile psychiatrique, proféra à mon endroit une cascade de sons gutturaux ne ressemblant à aucun langage connu, puis disparut en coulisses.
Au bout du compte, je suis resté coincé sans personne pour partager ces « nouvelles saveurs mutantes » dans ma bouche.
Depuis, je traque ces musiciens avec l'espoir de faire la lumière sur les mystères de P.LM.B. et débusquer l'ère du « Mutant Rock» qu’ils cachent dans leurs « tripes ».

Guide de l'explorateur de l'univers P.L.M.B

P.L.M.B. voit le jour à la fin de l'année 2003 à l’initiative du chanteur / guitariste Buddy A.
L’influence de la “mode” EMO, à son apogée aux États-Unis, fut le détonateur à contre courant de P.L.M.B.
En réaction, Buddy A crée avec Buddy B, son ami de longue date, un Rock ‘n Roll dont la « fun » attitude se base principalement sur un chant de voix solo et des jeux lyriques.
Installé dans un petit appartement de New – York, ils grattent les premières notes de ce qui va devenir le son P.L.M.B. Enregistrant sans relâche et organisant des concerts, ils se mettent à la recherche d’un label et signent avec Siamese Dogs Records.
C’est à New - York qu’ils enregistrent leur premier album : 27 chansons, dans lesquelles on décèle des influences aussi variées que le « Raw Power » d’Iggy Pop & The Stooges, le « Nevermind » de Nirvana", le « Rocket To Russia » des Ramones et la période solo de Johnny Thunders.

En 2008, désireux de conquérir l’Europe, Mr Buddy A emballe ses guitares et prend le premier avion pour Paris. Avec Siamese Dogs, ils promeuvent quelques concerts pour le lancement du premier E.P. (5 titres) : “Dead Moves-Not The Puzzle”.
Début 2009, c’est LA rencontre avec le bassiste, The DuDe, qui incarne la même passion Rock ’n Roll et un parcours similaire. Buddy A et The DuDe deviennent dès lors le "yin » et le « yang" de P.L.M.B. et sont rapidement rejoints par M. Maow, batteur et ami de longue date de The DuDe, pour former l’un des power trio les plus puissants à ce jour. Une parfaite alchimie qui coïncide avec la sortie en octobre 2009 du premier L.P. de P.L.M.B. : "Kill 1 Mutant Bird With 2 Stones», PM 1004 SDR, mauvais jeu de mot sur le proverbe français « faire d’une pierre 2 coups » devenu : « faire de 2 pierres 1 coup ».
Voilà ! Maintenant les morceaux “Mutant Rock” du groupe sont autant de « bombes à retardement » prêtes à vous exploser à la gueule. Ecoutez la Green Day-esque "Butter Sauce", le heavy “Queen Can’t Honas”… ou bien le blues punkifié de"Cancel The Cancelled Cancellation", vous saurez tout de suite que ces gars sont là pour tout faire péter !

Buddy A : Guitariste / chanteur
J'ai grandi en écoutant de la musique, mais je n’ai commencé à « en faire » qu’à partir de l’âge de 16 ans. Le premier instrument sur lequel j’ai tenté de jouer, était une Fender Squire qui m’avait été offerte en décembre 2000. Je me suis précipité pour écrire des chansons que j’ai enregistrées ensuite dans le studio de mon voisin. Au cours de l'été 2001, des amis m'ont dit qu'ils cherchaient un leader pour leur projet musical. Malgré l’absence de toute expérience en tant que chanteur dans un groupe, j’ai décidé d’essayer et cela modifia mon destin.
La musique devint ma vie. Après avoir entendu notre premier enregistrement, j'eus tellement honte de ma voix que je quittais définitivement le groupe et le chant pour aller à New - York fréquenter une école d'Art. C’est là que je me suis aperçu que la musique était ce à quoi j’aspirais artistiquement et je me suis attaché à développer mon talent musical. Grâce à cela, je suis parvenu à créer le style de P.L.M.B., dont la principale originalité réside sur la voix mixée à l’opposé du « dogme » EMO, dont j’ai pris le total contrepied.

The DuDe : Basse & Choeurs
Fan de musique depuis son plus jeune âge, The DuDe ne commença à pratiquer la musique qu’à l’âge de 17 ans, attrapant dès lors le virus. Très vite, il démarre son apprentissage en jouant avec le plus de groupes possibles (P.L.M.B. étant son 21e à ce jour), élargissant ainsi considérablement son univers musical (Funk, Punk, Grunge, Jazz, Pop, etc.…). Fort de cette pluri-universalité, The DuDe crée son propre style de basse, qu’il décrit lui-même comme « le groove du Funk et l’attaque du Punk ». Il rencontre Buddy A en 2009 et sans même une seule note de musique jouée, une étroite collaboration s’installe : alter-ego l’un de l’autre (autant physiquement, musicalement que philosophiquement), ils fabriquent le cocktail Molotov musical, signé P.L.M.B.

Question: What is MUTANT ROCK?
Answer: Can most easily be described with4 letters: P. L. M. B. (Pathological Lying Mutant Bird)

So the obvious follow up question would be: What is P.L.M.B.?

The simple answer would be the apparent pioneers of a new music genre called: “Mutant Rock”; which would leave us at square one again.
In this chronicle, I will do my best to unload my first hand impression of this unusual scene that has me baffled and excited.

I discovered this group at a club in Paris ripping through one of the most electrifying sets I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure as to where in fact these misfits formed exactly, but
a safe guess would be some place directly adjacent to a toxic waste land fill; underneath power lines in a region testing very rich in radio activity.

P.L.M.B. is on Siamese Dogs Records (SDR), the cult label from the early 70’s. In1971, Philippe Mogane, co -founder of SDR moved to the U.S.A in a quest for pure Rock ‘n Roll music and the freedom from conventions that it incarnated.
Sparked by Iggy& The Stooge’s release of “1969”, Mogane made his way to the West Coast where the boys from Detroit who had started a new era of music where encamped in a pink building on Sunset Blvd.

He would spend the next few months becoming close with them to eventually start Siamese Dogs Records with guitarist James Williamson (from the “Raw Power” album) as V.P. and Mogane doing the “hustle” work. They released “I Got A Right” and “Gimme Some Skin” which helped to fuel the NYC punk scene in the words of Joey Ramone’s past homage.

Now, over 30 years later, SDR is ready to bring the most insane and in-your-face Rock music to the masses once again. The hiatus was broken when Mogane discovered the Mutant Rock band known as P.L.M.B.
Headed by “cartoon-like” psychopath Buddy A, P.LM.B. is slithering through the Parisian sewers awaiting the overdue explosion they will unleash on the ears of true Rock n’ Roll fans worldwide.

I will let you in on the “Mutant Rock” concoction of the P.L.M.B. cocktail.
Begin with 4 oz. of Iggy Pop’s dirty Punk attitude, followed by 2 oz. of Johnny Thunders on-the-edge poetic sensibility. Grab 3 oz. of early Green Day’s power trio stupidity, and top it off with 5 hard oz. of the sheer demon power and brutality of Nirvana. Finish it up with a small dash of The Clash and The Ramones’s combat rock squad. Pour and serve. However, don’t attempt to drink it through a straw. You have to tilt your head back, open your throat, and swallow.

Fair warning, not everyone is equipped to stomach such a product.

You can imagine my curiosity following the performance I had just witnessed, so I attempted to corral the members for some post-show questioning. Unfortunately, the drummer was nowhere to be found as if he had just evaporated into thin air. When I passed the bassist and raised my arm to grab his attention, he shot a sharp and visible “No Comment” glance at me, which I dared not push further. If you ever see the guy you will understand exactly why. Finally, I managed to catch the guitarist/vocalist and started firing questions, which proved more trouble than it was worth. This most likely escaped mental patient responded with a hail of sounds that certainly could not be identified as any current language and disappeared backstage.

In conclusion, I am stuck with this Mutant taste in my mouth. A hard residue to simply shed without pondering intensively.
I continue to hunt these men in hopes to unlock the mysteries of P.LM.B. in my quest to uncover the Mutant Rock era lurking around the corner.

This was in the height of the EMO era in the United States which was the big "anti-influence” of P.L.M.B. Buddy A decided to create simple Rock n' Roll music with a fun attitude relying heavily on unique vocals and lyrical puzzles with long time friend Buddy B.
They crafted the early sound of P.L.M.B. together in a tiny NYC apartment and began playing live shows with very mixed feedback. After constant recording and playing live shows they began to build steam and started to shop for a label. They would eventually sign with Siamese Dogs Records, in NYC, to record 27 songs for the creation of their breaking album, with songs which had nothing to envy to Iggy Pop’s “Raw Power”, Nirvana’s “Nevermind”, The Libertines’s “Up The Bracket” or The Ramones’s “Rocket To Russia”…
At the end of 2008, Buddy A came out to Paris to play a few shows promoting the 5 song E.P.: "Dead Moves-Not The Puzzle"; that had been recorded with Siamese. The raving response from the audience and the Rock DJ’s made him realize he had to return to France to dedicate himself to the project. So Mr. A packed up his guitars and his clothing to move closer to the Siamese Dogs mates.
In early 2009, Buddy met bassist The DuDe who embodied the Rock n’ Roll flame and strained from the same background. They quickly impersonated the “yin-yang” of P.L.M.B. forming with Mr Maow, a long time friend of The DuDe and drummer, one of the most piss-your-pants rockin’ power trio ever.
On the strength of that line up and of the release, in October 2009, of P.L.M.B.’s first C.d.: “Kill 1 Mutant Bird With 2 Stones”, PM 1004 SDR, the band is ready to rock the world with their in your face kick ass Mutant Rock songs.
When you listen to songs like Green Day-esque “Butter Sauce”, the heavy “Queen Can’t Honas” or the punkified blues of “Cancel The Cancelled Cancellation”, you know these wayward sons are here to rock you off your boots…

Buddy A: Guitar & Vocals

I grew up listening to music but didn’t get involved until I was sixteen. The first instrument I played, or attempted to, was a Fender Squire I received in December of 2000. I immediately began writing a bunch of songs which I recorded at my neighbor's studio. In the summer of 2001, I was approached by friends who told me they were looking for a frontman in their musical project. Despite lacking any formal training or experience singing in a band, I decided to try out and become their new singer unaware that this would be a decisive act in changing me forever. Music became my life. Yet after hearing our first recording, I was so disturbed by the sound of my voice I quit and left the band to attend Art School in NYC. Through my visual studies, I realized music was in fact what I craved and I started crafting my art. I eventually came up with the style of P.L.M.B., which was mainly about keeping my voice straightforward with minimal mixing, and would musically satisfy me for the first time. (This was in the midst of the EMO era, so I basically did everything opposite)

The DuDe: Bass & Back up Vocals

Music fan from a very young age The DuDe only began to play music at 17, but as soon as he put his hand on a musical instrument he caught the virus. Quickly he began his learning by playing with as many bands as possible (P.L.M.B. being its 21st) significantly expanding his musical universe (Funk, Punk, Grunge, Jazz, Pop, etc.). At home in this multi-discipline universe, The DuDe created its own bass style which he describes himself as "Funk groove and Punk attack". He met Buddy A in 2009 and without even a musical note played, alchemy was at once there. Each of the two musicians are the perfect alter-ego of the other (in the tradition of Siamese brotherhood) fusing their creative visions to create P.L.M.B. explosive musical compositions.

Dear Ron,
I want to reminisce about the day we met.
When I took off from Paris in 1970 to settle down in the USA, I had two ideas in mind: to meet Bob Dylan & The Stooges.
My wishes went beyond my dreams and it's with great bliss I met you and the gang.
At the time, right after an ill fated "Raw Power" session, I found 2 clans in the pink building on Sunset Blvd. You all were barely speaking to each other but I still believe my trimester camping in front of the building wings did bring some truce to your fraternal split.
Before all, I was very lucky, like the child of divorced parents, to have met a whole bunch of talented guys.

Those days remain the best in my Beatnik Rock 'n Roll voyage.
Having to wait on Jim's "awakening", I decided to set up my office in the top floor's swimming pool in the next door hotel. Hardly a worse place to wait on Jim, especially for I used the space to shoot those "classic Iggy Pop" photos (few know how they were done.)
It gave us the opportunity to see and talk to one another. Most of the time at Denny’s around some good piles of food.
Thanks to Doug who, patiently and skillfully, was driving us to; as well as rehearsals where Vincent ("Alice Cooper") showed up one evening. Felt like part of the Detroit scene was hitting town to make it roll and rock.
And this is how I want to remember you, Ron, and the whole gang.
My failing health and my tremendous work prevented me from seeing you last year as I wanted to talk to you about digging out all “the New Order memorabilia” I gathered back in those good ole times.
Now that I won't be able to meet you for awhile, I will have to do it on my own.
Thanks to the Internet, I will ask our acolytes, fans and friends to dig out their photos of you. Some of your most faithful ones such as Ann’ arbor and Annamaryse responded right away. Both with different views and souvenirs.
It will be a way of keeping your work and your immense stature alive

The album starts innocently enough with the proto-punk opener "Putra Juice". And as I'm listening to the track, its as if Dead Moves; Not The Puzzle is pushing me into a dark tunnel. Taking both of us faster and deeper inside (like a suction). But just as im getting used to the idea of this queer sensation, heavily distorted guitars, loud thrashing drums, and a rather annoying voice, join us. This is unexpected.
And as second-to-minutes pass on, every sound is getting louder, thicker, more saturated. We are soon reaching the end of the tunnel, and the sounds of drums begin to pick up a loud plodding war march. A gruff voice sings, "I made an enemy/so I pissed on his pants".
I agree to the letter.

In Vitro set the tone for alternative Rock.
In Vitro releases his first 6 title-vinyl "Les Chaussures Pogo Vous Donnent de l'Elan" (« Pogo Shoes Give You Zeal ») acclaimed by the Press and Radio stations.
In 1990, In Vitro befriends the marginal anarcho-syndicalist Parisian crowd. The police often join the party with the unrelenting aim to kill the noise. Bar owners get fined and electro groups loose their welcome.
The countryside and Europe remain the only place for the freedom to Rock.
A 3 songs EP: « Pronostic Vital Engagé » is released in 1999, and a single: « Riot In The Sand » reaches the following year the London shores making the Capital Radio charts. Yet, having decided that the single was "not well produced," the Buzzcocks manager refuses to let In Vitro open for the band.
In Vitro sound caught the ears of Philippe Mogane who, recognizing the energy, will and political engagement of the band as attuned with the Siamese Dogs pursuit of the atypical policy took on the production of the Cd: « Iz Paris Still Rockin'? », PM 1004 SDR.
In Vitro is Yo singing and rhythm guitar, Paul Somebody, all guitars out, Groover, the Bass Player and Tommy on drums.

And I thank you for your knowledgeable attention.

Although your first review was more caustic/hinging on cynical, I am elated to read how well you did your home work. And how, pulling out your famed demoniac magnifying glass, you gave a scrutinizing eye at the content of the Siamese Records crusade.The reason I chose that roster is to show to all that, despite American ugliness whose evil politic has branded the World today, there is another America: The People's America where human beings, from all nations and races, have thrown in the cauldron their cultures and hearts. Through much pains and sorrows.

You have to go back in time to view a world without internet and quasi lack of information to realize that our combat rock was musical commitment in the pursuit of Human Truth. "I Got A Right", for the Kids all over the world - "Street Queen", against Bi/Homo/Trans bashing which was at his paroxysm in the 70's - "Neutron Bomb", against the Reagan Imperialism - "Beat Her With A Rake", to open the dialogue on the subject of violence against Women - "Hound Dog", with Little Richard, the King of R 'n R, as an homage to Afro Americans for their immense contributions to the Americana Culture – “Electric Church” or How To Start Your Own Little Church - "I Am A President", released on Reagan's coronation, as a warning for what was to come. And it is in continuation of our work that I thought our powerful music issued from sadness, anger and suffering had to be released again for the young ones. The combat is still on and that’s why the compilation's subtitle is: "It's Time To Wake Up Again, America!!!"

THE BAD NEWS...all that punk rock you and I "grew up" with is now well-entrenched in the MUSIC OF EVERLASTING INFINITE HISTORICAL VALUE wing of collective Amerigan/world psyche along with big band music, fifties rockabilly and early-sixties surf toonz which means it's time for goofy people with horn-rimmed glasses to study the stuff just like it was a bug under a microscope. THE GOOD NEWS...now that seventies punk rock is a past phenom to be looked back upon in hallowed tones of honor that means MORE and MORE "archival digs" will result in a flurry of compilations and upheavals none of us would have expected even twenty years back. This is but one of them...I guess the label in question is really called "Siamese Dogs" but I remember when it was "Siamese" and they released this Stooges single (credited to "Iggy Pop and James Williamson") taken from the RAW POWER sessions or something like that which had more'n a few 1977 punkers throbbing in anarchic ecstasy after repeated spins of METALLIC KO. Little did I know that there were more than a few records on this obscure label which, along with such competitors as Dangerhouse, Gulcher, Ork and Back Door Man (oops! sorry Jay!!!) documented the budding American underground scene at a time when it really needed documenting in the face of media blah. This disque does a good job of collecting the Siamese Dogs label's wares all in one neat place, not only with the Iggy stuff (including the alt. take of "I Got a Right" as well as the rarity "Rock Action") but with tracks courtesy the great Controllers (who got a nice review in the latest issue of my own crybaby reactionary fanzine!) as well as the Weasels who I originally assumed were just another buncha bandwagon punks but who in reality were a pretty hefty punk/metallic merger who actually had Van Halen opening their shows (and maybe VH coulda been this good had they forsaken the Los Angeles slicksterdom for Detroit high energy!) and other worthies of varying rockist degrees. Biggest surprise: The Attitude and their cover of "Hound Dog," featuring none other than Little Richard on the ivories! And I thought the guy was a no-talent bore after seeing him schmooze up to Phil Donahue on the telly!

GODFATHERS Of L A PUNK

It's amazing how a seemingly elegant story can become astonishingly complex the closer you look at it. Take, for example, Darwinian evolution. Darwin's original notion of the place where life on Earth began was a gentle "warm pond," a conceptual predecessor to the "primordial soup" that most of us probably learned about in high school.

In the middle of the 20th century it was more commonly believed that life began, whether in a pond or not, in the fairly harsh environment of a noxious atmosphere composed of ammonia, methane, ethane, and other gases (oxygen only came later, a product largely of plant-based photosynthesis). The famous experiment from the 1950s where scientists created amino acids by running lighting through a flask full of these gases was the watershed moment in this line of thinking.

More recent research confounds this thesis in turn, arguing that organic compounds -- especially RNA, the probable evolutionary precursor to DNA -- dissolve readily under such conditions, and therefore would have a hard time surviving such an environment.

The current thinking is that the early evolution of life on earth was many-pronged, possibly resulting in numerous forms of life (e.g. protein life, RNA life, even rudimentary life based on clay crystals) that were eventually outcompeted by DNA-based life, viruses, and certain possible forms of RNA-based life that may yet survive. Yet more radical theories argue that the early chemical precursors to Earth life may have formed on Mars billions of years ago, when that planet's chemistry and climate were more favorable to the formation of RNA-like compounds, and then came to earth by accident after meteor strikes knocked some of Mars out into space.

The point, before I bore all my readers into submission, is that history is always far, far more complicated than it at first seems. The simple classroom narrative almost always covers up all the interesting complexities and for this can end up being almost wrong.

This goes for music history too. Every so often, new recordings emerge into popular view that change the dominant narrative of pop music as we know it. Just last year Rhino released One Kiss Can Lead To Another: Girl Group Sounds Lost And Found, a tour de force compilation of 120 girl-group recordings from the 1960s that acts as sort of a companion piece to that label's four-disc Nuggets set, which collected American garage rock from roughly the same period.

Together these two box sets amount to a drastic revision of the usual quickie history of Rock and Roll in which rock and roll hit a dead patch after the Elvis joined the Army and didn't get interesting again until the Beatles wave broke over North America, and didn't get good for Americans until the Summer of Love. Judging from songs collected on these two Rhino sets, that history is not only wrong but monstrously unfair to a huge number of artists working between 1959 and 1968 who have had the misfortune to fall on the wrong side of tightly controlled Oldies Radio playlists.

One lesson to take away from both my tiresome little homilies is that what we think we know, what survives to make up our worlds, has as much to do with accident as with design (whether "intelligent" or not). So why did I just expend 500-odd words on jibber-jabber about DNA and Rhino Records? Because of a new compilation called Godfathers of L.A. Punk: Today Its Time To Wake Up Again America!!!, out now on Siamese Dogs records.

The usual narrative of punk rock goes something like this: The Stooges begat The Ramones begat the Sex Pistols who begat Everyone Else, world without end, Amen. This is a neat little chapbook of a history that, while elegant, completely fails to explain what the Dead Boys and Rocket From The Tombs were doing in Cleveland in '74, how the Saints came from Australia, or why when the Sex Pistols went to California for the first time, there were punk bands ready and waiting to open the show for them.

It turns out that -- surprise! -- there's more to the story.

Siamese Dogs Records is the brainchild of one Philippe Mogane, a French photographer who, in the 1970s, found himself in Los Angeles with a bagful of high-end cameras and a serious jones for the Detroit-bred musical stylings of one James N. Osterberg, better known as Iggy Pop, and his band The Stooges. Mogane found himself in fact living in the same tatty building as The Stooges, and in time became sort of a go-between among the warring Stooge factions. The photos he took of the group were published in Europe, resulting in renewed interest in the group there.

At the same time, Mogane became interested in the local bands that were following in The Stooges' footsteps, and with Stooges guitarist James Williamson founded Siamese Dogs records to promote these groups. Their first releases were a couple archival singles by the Stooges, "I Got a Right" and "Gimme Some Skin."

By the time 1978 rolled around, the punk sound was on the breeze and Siamese Dogs was riding the first wave of Los Angeles punk, releasing music by (as Mogane styles them) "the Godfather of LA Glam Punk," The Max Lazer Band, "The Godfathers of LA Hard Punk," The Weasels, and "the Godfathers of LA Punk," The Controllers, among others. Mogane now feels the world is finally ready for the music he recorded nearly thirty years ago, and has revived the Siamese Dogs imprint to release Godfathers of LA Punk.

One thing for sure is that the bands recorded by Siamese Dogs are clear ancestors of many great California legends. Godfathers captures something about Southern California, a feeling that would eventually play out in recordings by dozens of bands we know well. For example, The Controllers and The Weasels point the way straight to The Germs, Black Flag, The Weirdos, Suicidal Tendencies, Bay Area bands like Flipper and The Dead Kennedys and even Jane's Addiction. And though it is surely heresy to say so, you can hear in the glam of The Max Lazer Band a little bit of the strut and swagger that influenced the metal scene that spawned Guns 'n' Roses. In these latter cases, it's not so much a sound as a vibe, a creeping Californianess that colored each nascent scene and ties together bands as diverse as The Doors, X, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Suicidal Tendencies.

But all this historical importance is of interest only to snotty record collectors who own Stiff Little Fingers LPs on vinyl and can name from memory the birth-names of all the Ramones, CJ included. Without decent music, no disc like Godfathers of LA Punk will be anything more than a curiosity, a mildly interesting document of a time just as well forgotten. Luckily, that is not the case. Instead,Godfathers of LA Punk is very worthwhile listening for any serious punk collector. Besides its historical value, there is just too much music here of surpassing quality to pass up.

To begin with, the Stooges tracks, "I Got A Right" and "Gimme Some Skin (both alternates from the Raw Power sessions) are practically worth the price of admission on their own. But beyond the long shadow of Iggy is a surprisingly diverse collection that probably has something to please punk fans of every stripe.

My personal favorites are The Weasels and The Controllers, who in particular anticipate merchants of gratuitous outrage like The Circle Jerks and The Dead Kennedys and the hard-boiled tales of X. The Weasels' biggest hit, "Beat Her With A Rake," is a song about a guy who beats his girlfriend to death for giving head to another guy again in public. Objectively, there is absolutely nothing redeeming about a song whose message line is "beat her with a rake and make her pay for her mistake." Indeed, it's only sorta-funny in the way that appeals to world-weary eighteen year olds. Nonetheless, over a trashy and muscular punk riff that is years ahead of their time, The Weasels sell "Beat Her With A Rake" and another domestic abuse single (this one with a Nazi twist!) called "I'm The Commander" to the hilt, reveling in their brazen crassness.

Similarly, The Controllers' melodic proto-hardcore stomp "Do The Uganda" is about wanting to "get VD and be real mean, I wanna be black and look like Idi Amin," only to conclude that "You can't leave Uganda, yeah the joke's on you!"

Mean-spirited joke songs like these seem indigenous to California's punk scene. It would be a surprise if a young Jello Biafra hadn't come across these records up in his Bay Area home.

With such classically tasteless offerings as these on hand, it is no wonder that Philippe Mogane himself emailed me in response to my request for a review copy of this album, warning me that "it might be too staggering for your proper, nice and orderly mind." Well, fair enough. But I've heard songs like "Beat Her With A Rake" before, going all they way back to The Leaves' and Hendrix' versions of "Hey Joe," Jim Morrison's half-silly spoken word rants about killing his parents, and even John Lee Hooker's lovingly detailed torture-murder fantasy "Bad Like Jesse James." And if I can enjoy Snoop singing about how he "don't love these ho's" or the Meatmen singing about how crippled children suck, then I can surely get a thrilling transgressive frission out of the absolute awful, terrible wrongness of a chorus that goes, "beat her with a rake and make her pay for her mistake."

Beyond the manic (but today fairly orthodox-sounding) punk of The Weasels and The Controllers, Godfathers is a gratifyingly diverse set. The Max Lazer Band enriches glam rock with saxophones and a punk edge, and if "Street Queen" isn't quite as ferocious as some of the other offerings here, it still glitters, writhes, and bites hard.

More interesting still are the arty, jagged noise experiments of Nu Americans and the Attitude, both of whom even employ - gasp! - keyboards! The Attitude's cover of "Hound Dog," featuring some hot piano from Little Richard, is a nicely sacrilegious good time, and Nu Americans' bizarre "Listen To Your Heart" sounds like some unholy mix of The Slits, Devo and Captain Beefheart. That is, except for one thing: Devo and The Slits had yet to release their first records. (Indeed, this is just one of the many ways in which the bands on Godfathers of LA Punk were ahead of their time. Iggy Pop may have showed everyone the way as far back as '73, but even in 1978, the day of punk had yet to arrive.)

Together the Attitude and Nu Americans remind me of a one-shot video I have of a band called the Steel Tips, who opened for the Dead Boys at CBGB in '77. The Steel Tips mixed Zappa with The MC5 and added some atonal riffing on top, in what I presume was an effort to sound like no other band ever. Having now heard The Nu Americans and The Attitude, I now suspect that bands like this were incredibly common in 1978 and have now been all but forgotten. And although I'm not personally in love with that sound, your mileage may certainly vary.

If a French photographer had never shacked up with the Stooges in a grimy Los Angeles loft, the bands on Godfathers of LA Punk might never have been committed to wax. And if said French photographer hadn't decided that it was time for America to hear these sounds again, they would be lost forever but for faint memories in the minds of Los Angeles' oldest bartenders and punk progenitors.

Godfathers of LA Punk isn't necessarily the alpha and omega of Los Angeles punk rock, but it is definitely of interest to any and all fans of the genre. More importantly, it helps shed some light on the murky beginnings of one of punk's most important scenes. Punk was the one of the last great gasps in rock and roll's evolution before its long, slow decline toward the millennium, and we owe it to future generations of truth seekers to give them the straight story. I'm sure that what Philippe Mogane has done in reissuing these songs could be done (has it been done?) in Houston, in Cleveland, in Chicago, and every little jerkwater burg in between. And even if all the music so rediscovered is not worth saving, it would be nice to make that decision consciously rather than let happenstance and obscurity swallow dreck and diamonds alike.

One final note: Godfathers of LA Punk contains the answer to a question I didn't even know needed asking: what's the deal with Pauly Shore? Readers of a certain age will remember that in his MTV days, Pauly Shore would frequently refer to himself in the third person as "the wea-sel," with just that singsongy skip in the middle: "wea-sel." Well guess what? I think I know what Pauly Shore was listening to before he hit the big time, because The Weasels introduce themselves in the live version of "Beat Her With A Rake" as, you guessed it, "The Wea-sels." You learn something new every day.

If you think punk rock started in England, well, you're dead wrong! Punk had its roots with bands such as MC5 / Iggy & the Stooges, etc. These bands would later define an entire generation. Yes, punk rock begun in America. And if The Stooges, The Ramones and The Heartbreakers (Johnny Thunders band) didn't tour England during the 70s there would mostly likely be no British punk as we know it. This compilation assembled by Philippe Mogane documents the seminal proto-punks of the U.S west coast during the late 1960's, 70's, and early 80's, with bands ranging from the obvious [The Stooges, The Weasels, The Controllers], to the obscure [Max Lazer Band, The Attitude, Nu Americans], all dignity flattened and remastered for your modern convenience. And it's definitely a worthwhile addition to anyone's musical collection. Review by Willie Desamero.

A compilation of Siamese Records Punk/Rock Bands, released today on Siamese Dogs Records, a label set up by Philippe MOGANE. He first set out to the States in 71 to track down the Stooges, found them, took pictures of them (a few exclusive ones in the inlay), and released I GOT A RIGHT/GIMME SOME SKIN on the Siamese label with then Stooges guitarist, James WILLIAMSON as V.P. This kicks off the pre-street punk party and along the way you'll get the original "Neutron Bomb" by The Controllers, a track that inspired the Weirdos. Black Sabbath and Doors fanatics - The Weasels toured for a few years in Southern California with Van Halen opening up for them (pre-spandex), they contribute "Beat Her With A Rake" a song about .. You guessed it, woman beating! Although the general public decided to storm record shops to destroy the record, it was nevertheless deemed a classic and was played the shit out of on KROQ (Probably LA's biggest Rock station.) The Attitude contribute Hound Dog (Yes, that one) with Little Richard (Yes, that one) on piano! Deemed too blasphemous at the time, it didn't get any airplay at all, and the band ended up "killing each other" whilst trying to record an album. Max Lazer was probably one of the What you get here is an excellent insight into some of the best bands LA had to offer.
